After David had finished speaking with Saul, the souls of Jonathan and David were knit together, and Jonathan loved him as himself.
1 Samuel 18:1

What exactly is a soul tie?

A soul tie is a deep emotional connection or a bond with another person. When two people come together in a good soul tie, it is a blessing as the power of God intensifies, as seen in Deuteronomy 32:30.

1 Samuel 18:1 says, “the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David” (ESV). Likewise, marriage represents a good soul tie between a husband and wife because their souls are joined together as one flesh (Mark 10:8).

When does a soul tie become unhealthy?

A soul tie becomes unhealthy when the opposite person becomes like an idol in your life, which can lead to addictive, manipulative, or violent behavior. It can serve as bridges between two people to pass demonic garbage through!

You may see this happening in relationships or friendships subtly over a period of time without you even realizing it, which makes it even more dangerous.

Unhealthy soul ties are selfish, whereas real love is based on having Jesus as the center of your relationship and looking beyond yourself. It is the devil’s trap to keep you away from God’s best in your life and can leave you drained, damaged, and condemned.

What are the signs that you are in an unhealthy soul tie?

  • The person becomes an idol and your mind is consumed with thoughts of that individual 24/7.
  • You are constantly checking on the person, his or her social media, and rehearsing your time with him or her.
  • You become obsessive and possessive about the individual and feel jealous if he or she is around other people.
  • You can’t let go of a relationship, even when it is abusive or negatively impacting you.
  • You lose your sense of reasoning, clarity, and judgment, and all you want is to please the other person.
  • You feel worse about yourself as the relationship goes on, and your family or leaders repeatedly express concern over the health of your relationship.
  • You give the person more authority in your life than you give God.
