Girl, where is your focus?

We live in a generation that struggles to focus. Don’t believe me? Look around you. There’s distraction everywhere. Ask someone to give you their undivided attention for 5 minutes, and you’ll see how in a minute, their mind starts wandering; in 2 minutes, their phone starts ringing, and before you know it, you’ve already lost their attention.

But little do we realise that our lack of focus is costing us.

Recently, I was waiting for a train to head to work. As there was still a few minutes for the train to arrive, I decided just to check my phone. I kid you not! The train came and passed by, and I did not even realise it. It was only when I lifted my eyes off the phone to see the indicator that I realised that I had missed the train and would have to wait for half an hour for the next train. Hoping to still make it to work on time, I headed to the next station to catch another train. But guess what? I waited and waited, only to find out that every other train was delayed that day. So, I had to turn back and return home as there was no way I could make it to work.

While I was walking back home, extremely disappointed at my foolishness, the Holy Spirit whispered to me gently, saying, “You know, this Christian life is about continual and constant focus. And you can’t afford to be distracted even for a second.”

I realised how costly entertaining just a minute of distraction can be.

This is what I learnt through this experience-

Loss of focus = loss of time

Just a minute of distraction caused me to lose 1 hour of my time. I lost 1 hour of energy. 1 hour of effort. 1 hour of purpose. Not to mention the condemnation I had to fight while heading back home.

Now think, the enemy can plant one distraction, and if you and I take that bait, it could cause us to lose years. It can keep us going around the same mountain. It can cause us to miss the train God has for us.

Loss of focus = loss of opportunity

There is an opportune time for everything. And there is a grace for everything. And it is important that we steward that grace; otherwise, we end up wasting it.

The Bible says in Luke 9:51, “Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up, that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem,”

You see, even Jesus moved when the time had come, i.e., at the opportune time. And Jesus set His face on the journey He was called for. So much so that later on, when the Samaritans didn’t welcome Him, it didn’t even bother Jesus. He was able to blur out the noise and continue walking. (Luke 9:53)

Again, have you heard of the woman with the issue of blood? Oh, she was a woman of focus!

How is that?

She knew the goal, and she knew what was at stake. Even in a crowd that was pressing against Jesus, she was able to blur the multitude, blur the noise, blur the commotion, and trace a path through it all to reach the hem of Jesus’ garment. Imagine if she was distracted even for a second; imagine if she met someone on the way and decided to engage in a conversation. She would’ve lost her breakthrough. But no! She was focused. And how was that possible? She kept reminding herself of the goal. (Mark 5:28)

We’re on a journey!

Hey, daughter of God, you and I are called on a journey. Today, let this post remind us that we can’t afford to lose the constant touch of the Holy Spirit, even for a second. And we definitely can’t afford to entertain distractions or live a compromised life saying, “oh, it’s just one movie”, or “it’s just one message”, or “it’s just one call, let me try it, and I’ll be right back on the Christian train seeking God.”

It doesn’t work like that.

David, whose one desire was to behold the beauty of the Lord (Psalm 27:4), when he decided to entertain a distraction and shifted his focus to behold the beauty of a woman (2 Samuel 11:2), ended up displeasing God, killing a man and bringing adversity on his whole household.

So wise daughters, let’s realign our focus today.

Let’s not miss the train God has for us. Let our focus be on the word. Let our gaze be on Jesus. And let us blur out the distractions planted by the enemy to steal our time. And let us set our face on the journey, continually reminding ourselves what we are here for and what is at stake.
