Wanna Save Your Friends in the Pub?

That’s a genuine and a good desire. But there is a problem if this good desire is leading you to the pub or discotheque where your friends are. The Bible says, “The righteous should choose his friends carefully, For the way of the wicked leads them astray.” Proverbs 12:26

Let me throw light on what you cannot see.

The friends you keep, or the people you surround yourself with, can snatch the destiny that God has in store for you. This is the most deceptive way how the devil subtly causes addictions, wrong desires and temptations to be transferred.

God Is Good

I have heard many youth say, “I need to go to the pubs with my friends in order to win them for Christ. After all, even Jesus was found in the company of tax collectors and sinners.”

That’s immature thinking because if you study the life of Jesus, He never went pursuing after anybody. Instead, He always asked people to follow Him. He would pass by fishermen and tax collectors, and tell them “follow me”, and they would drop their nets, their businesses and follow Him.

This is consistent throughout the Bible. So when you talk about Jesus being in the company of sinners and tax collectors, remember He wasn’t found at their location, instead they drew near to where He was.

Luke 15:1: Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, “This Man receives sinners and eats with them.”

Again in Matthew 9:9-10 we read,

As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” He told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Him and His disciples.

It was the tax collectors and sinners who drew near to Jesus’ location, and not vice versa.

Girls! don’t take your friendships lightly

The Bible says in Psalm 1:1-2, Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night.

Every conversation that you have with a friend who speaks the language of the world is a seed that is thrown in your heart and sooner or later, it will bear fruit. Instead, choose to be found in the company of people who celebrate your God and His Word. Your maximum time has to be spent in the company of people who are not just like minded, rather Christ-minded. Remember Mary and Elizabeth? When Mary received a word of conception from the angel, she rushed to Elizabeth who had also conceived through the same powerful Word.

So what is the right approach to win your friends? As a child of God, you don’t have to feel condemned or guilty over your friends who don’t know Jesus. Pray for them, share the love of Jesus with them. But in your friendships, be led by the Spirit of God and be wise in the Word of God.

If your friends don’t listen to you, don’t take it as your personal calling to convince them. Instead grow in knowing your God and your self-worth in Him. As a child of God, you have to shine your light bright and be an influence on your friends through your life, more than your words.

Excel in your work, studies, character and all you do. It is by leaning on the Word of God and obeying what it says that will cause fruit to manifest in your life, and those around you will be drawn to the Jesus in you.
