Many of us have desires that we are waiting to see fulfilled in our lives. And sometimes when we don’t see those desires fulfilled, it becomes easy to think that God is fighting our desires and we start doubting His goodness.
But it is not God who is fighting your desires. In fact, He says in His Word, “Delight in Me and I will give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
Actually it’s ‘YOUR’ desires that are fighting you!
That’s because those desires were not conceived right. Our desires are either birthed from our intimacy with God or from the world.
Desires that come from intimacy with God
God called Abraham His friend, and in that sweet friendship, God told him, “I’m going to make you a great nation,” and “Your children will be as numerous as the stars in the sky” (Gen 12:2, Gen 26:4).
With that, God placed a desire in Abraham’s heart. It was birthed in intimacy with God.
Desires that come from the world
You see, every time God spoke, He spoke to Abraham, and not directly to Sarah. So what did Sarah do? Right after Abraham received the promise from God, Sarah told Abraham to sleep with Hagar, and Ishmael was born (Genesis 16:2).
In that moment of weakness, Sarah looked around and saw everyone else with children and there was birthed a desire for a child. It was a good desire, but it didn’t come from her intimacy with God, and that’s why it ended up as a mistake.
So how does it apply practically to you?
Most of us are getting our desires from the world – from YouTube and Instagram, and it may even seem good – like the desire for success in ministry. But then those desires cause us to push to “make things happen”, like Sarah, and ending up in chaos and confusion.
How to Receive God-desires for Your Life?
God wants you to take your desires from Him, and not from your community or social media. So, in this season, spend more time with the Holy Spirit and you will begin to get unique desires. And the best part is, He who began it, will bring it to completion. He will not only meet, but exceed your expectations.
Now, isn’t that a better way?
