Why do bad things happen to me? It’s a question I’ve asked God more than once. Maybe you’ve asked it too: “Why me, God? Why does it feel like I’m always the one going through this?”
You try to live right. You help others, sacrifice your time, serve God faithfully, and genuinely want to honor Him. Yet life still brings heartbreak, disappointment, and pain. In moments like these, it’s easy to wonder whether God allowed it or even caused it.
Here are two truths that changed everything for me#

Truth #1: God is not the author of the evil you’re facing.
One of the biggest questions we ask during painful seasons is, “Did God do this to me?” I wrestled with that question too.
But when I looked at what Jesus said, my perspective began to change. In John 10:10, Jesus says, “The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” Jesus makes a clear distinction. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came to bring life, and life in abundance.
God is not looking for ways to hurt His children. Even when the enemy brings pain, Romans 8:28 reminds us that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Notice what the verse says: God works in every situation to bring about good. What the enemy intends for harm, God is able to redeem for His glory and our good just as He did in Joseph’s life.
Truth #2: Your holiness or goodness cannot stop the devil from attacking you.
Maybe you’ve prayed something like this:
“God, I’ve been serving You. I give to ministries, help people, try my best to live a holy life and stay away from sin. So why do bad things keep happening to me?”
Then you look around and it seems like people who don’t even care about God are enjoying life.
They go partying, live however they want, and everything appears to be going well for them, while you’re the one struggling.
It can feel confusing and unfair.
But remember Jesus.
When Jesus was born, He was only a baby. He didn’t sin, hurt anyone, or even speak a word. Yet King Herod wanted Him dead and ordered the killing of baby boys in an attempt to destroy Him.
What had baby Jesus done to deserve that?
Nothing.
The attack wasn’t because of what Jesus had done. It was because the enemy wanted to stop God’s purpose.
In the same way, not every difficult season is the result of something you’ve done wrong. Sometimes the enemy attacks because you belong to God and because he knows God has a purpose for your life.
The good news is that the enemy doesn’t have the final say. Jesus has given us authority over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). We don’t have to live in fear, we can stand firm in Christ, knowing that God is with us.
If you’ve been through painful seasons and wondered, “Why did God let this happen?” I pray this brings you peace. God did not orchestrate the bad that happened to you. Our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the powers of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). As Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” Knowing God’s true heart changes everything.
Need prayer or want to share what’s on your heart? Write to us, we’d love to pray for you, believe God with you, and stand with you in faith.
