My biggest lesson from 2022
Like most of you, every year I purchase a beautiful dairy and use the first page to set goals for myself. As I enter 2023, I like to go back to the 2022 dairy, spending time, reflecting on the previous year, and preparing my heart and mind for the next. As I contemplate, the most important lesson I learnt which I believe should be the foundation for our lives is: God wants us to not only survive, but thrive under him.
Those who trust in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. (Proverbs 11:28)
So yes, celebrate Jesus… for you thrived in 2022
Here are a few lessons that built and strengthened me in 2022:
In the year 2022, I released God was focused on fixing my heart. I remember in the month of March, I started to see the enemies plan unfold in my life; but God had already given me a word in January to prepare me.“Guard your heart, be faithful Sheryl”
I learnt to guard my heart by guarding my eyes, mouth and ears. Holy Spirit reminded me to be intentional of what I spoke, saw or heard. Here are 3 keys to guard your heart:
1) Guard your eyes:
Keep away from watching anything that will erupt an emotion that you are struggling with. I had watched myself and identified that romantic and thriller movies had the tendency to go deep in my heart and spring up emotions that I could not handle. Romantic movies would made me expect a similar married life like in the movies, and when that did not happen, I would get disappointed. And thriller movies would make me imagine unseen things in the dark… you know what I mean.
So I quickly cut off from them… If I felt like watching a movie I would watch good Biblical movies.
2) Guard your ears:
I have always been influenced with music, I believe many of us are because God has put worship and music in our hearts. So I made it a point to listen to uplifting worship music or listen to amazing Christian podcasts and books that are available for free.
3) Guard your mouth:
I learnt from my spiritual parents “If you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything”. I reminded my self often, I don’t have to share my opinion about everything and that I will only speak to uplift. My colleague recently introduced me to a GenZ lingo “FOMO” (fear of missing out); that is when the Holy Spirit spoke to me that ‘FOMO” is the biggest battle we all face.
Hey, it’s ok if you miss out on the joke or the latest topic in your office; but don’t miss out on the voice of God.
As I was intentional in guarding my heart, God was rewarding me with His presence by speaking to me through the Bible or a song and many times through the man and woman of God placed over me.Believe me, as the year has ended, I can look back and say, “I have been guarded from making many mistakes”. God has been my refuge and my I have been protected under is almighty wings.
He will never leave you nor forsake you
Girls, as a person I am very private, I don’t share anything about my personal life. However, today here I am peeling that layer of me to glorify the work of God in my life. When I would meet women that did not fall into relationships or habits in there teenage years, in my heart, I always blamed God for not protecting me from falling in wrong relationships or habits.
I would cry out to God so many times, “Why did you forsake me when I was in my teens, why did you never protect me”. I had to go through so many heart breaks and get over over so many addictions when I received Christ, my walk with Him was very different from the other Christian good girls in the church.
Truly truly , I tell you Our God never leaves us, I am a living proof. Even when I made the wrong choices He was with me. He watched over me and at the appointed time sent people in my life to reveal His never-ending love for me. Deuteronomy 31:8 T_he LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you._
Now by Guarding my heart, I continue to stay under the protection that God offers and not just survive but thrive daily.
Girls, so what was your biggest lesson from 2022?
XOXO
